"Grandma Posse" Initiative

Aiming to educate businesses on cryptocurrency kiosk fraud and the City of Omaha Ordinance 44007

Problem

Residents ages 55+ in Nebraska were increasingly becoming victims of cryptocurrency-related scams. Scammers - often impersonating government officials or family members - were directing individuals to crypto kiosks and convincing them to deposit large sums of money. This resulted in millions of dollars in financial losses across the state.

Solution

Ensure that every crypto machine in Omaha, Nebraska, had proper warnings, regulations, and scam-prevention signage displayed. The goal was to reduce the number of individuals unknowingly transferring money to scammers and increase overall consumer awareness.

Project Details

I was tasked with conducting a full landscape analysis of all crypto kiosks in Omaha. Using multiple online crypto directories and machine databases, I identified every kiosk location and compiled the information into a comprehensive Excel master list categorized by zip code, business name, and address.

Once the list was finalized, I organized the kiosk locations into evenly distributed groups - assigning each volunteer team approximately 10 businesses to visit for compliance checks. To support their fieldwork, I designed structured half-sheet documentation forms with clear questions and checklists for volunteers to complete at each location.

I presented the full findings, project plan, and volunteer instructions at our Crypto Safety Awareness Event with Sheriff Hanson, ensuring all teams understood the goals, routes, and reporting process for the initiative.

Created a three-part video series for AARP to educate Nebraska volunteers on how the state legislature operates, helping improve understanding of advocacy processes and civic engagement. Promoted them on YouTube, X, and Facebook.
